Casey's Stock Tumbles as Strong Q1 Earnings Fail to Meet High Expectations

Casey’s General Stores (NASDAQ: CASY) stock plunged 10.1% in after-hours trading after the company reported fiscal first-quarter results that, while beating analyst estimates, failed to satisfy investor expectations for sustained high growth.
Headline Beat Obscured by Underlying Trends
The convenience store operator reported adjusted earnings per share of $7.37, significantly above the consensus estimate of $6.68. Revenue for the quarter reached $5.68 billion, also exceeding the expected $5.57 billion and marking a nearly 24% increase year-over-year.
Despite the strong top- and bottom-line performance, which CEO Darren Rebelez called a "great start" to the company's three-year strategic plan, the market's reaction was sharply negative. Investors appeared to focus on a deceleration in same-store sales growth and the company's decision to maintain its full-year guidance rather than raising it.
Investor Expectations and Market Reaction
The sell-off suggests that the positive results were already priced into the stock, with investors looking for an even stronger performance and an upgraded outlook to justify its valuation. The unchanged guidance was interpreted as a sign that the record momentum from fiscal 2026, which saw diluted EPS of $19.16, might be slowing.
AdThe stock fell to $659.73 in after-hours activity. While this is well above its 52-week low of $497.38, it represents a significant pullback from its 52-week high of $927.85.
Analyst Caution Preceded Report
The market's cautious stance was foreshadowed by recent analyst actions. In the weeks leading up to the earnings release, several firms had trimmed their price targets on Casey's stock, signaling concern about its ability to maintain its growth trajectory.
- Deutsche Bank cut its target from $1,000 to $927.
- JPMorgan lowered its target from $975 to $833.
- UBS reduced its target from $945 to $925, while maintaining a Neutral rating.
