Background

Futures contracts tied to Canada's main stock index were nearly flat Wednesday morning as investors positioned for a key monetary policy announcement from the Bank of Canada and digested a sharp rise in crude oil prices.

As of 8:11 a.m. ET, S&P/TSX 60 index futures were down just 2 points, or approximately 0.1%, signaling a cautious open for the Toronto market.

Bank of Canada in Focus

The primary focus for investors is the Bank of Canada's upcoming interest rate decision. The central bank is widely expected to raise its benchmark rate for the first time since July 2023. The anticipated move comes as policymakers look to address persistent inflationary pressures, which have been exacerbated by rising energy costs.

The S&P/TSX composite index had a stronger showing in the prior session, reaching a six-day high. The advance was supported by positive quarterly results from electronics manufacturer Celestica and a rise in gold prices that lifted the materials sector.

Commodity Market Volatility

Developments in commodity markets are also influencing investor sentiment. Oil prices surged by more than $2 a barrel following a reported attack on a refinery in Saudi Arabia, renewing concerns over a potential widening of conflict in the Middle East. This is a significant factor for the energy-heavy TSX.

Meanwhile, gold prices fell as a slightly firmer U.S. dollar and anticipation of a separate policy decision from the U.S. Federal Reserve put downward pressure on the precious metal.

U.S. Markets Eye Fed, Tech Earnings

In contrast to the muted tone in Canada, U.S. stock futures pointed to a higher open, particularly for the tech-heavy Nasdaq. Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.4%, while S&P 500 futures added 0.2%.

The positive sentiment in the U.S. was largely driven by a global rally in semiconductor stocks after memory chip giant SK Hynix reported blowout earnings. U.S. investors are also awaiting the Federal Reserve's own rate decision, where it is expected to hold rates steady, as well as a slate of earnings from megacap tech companies including Microsoft and Alphabet.
