Canadian Dollar Hits 3-Week High After Strong June Jobs Report

The Canadian dollar, or loonie, climbed to its strongest level in three weeks against the U.S. dollar on Friday, propelled by a surprisingly robust domestic employment report for June.
Jobs Data Surpasses Expectations
Canada's economy added a net 18,200 jobs in June, comfortably beating analyst estimates of a 10,000-job gain, according to official data. The report also showed the unemployment rate declining to 6.5%. This labor market strength suggests continued economic momentum despite ongoing trade uncertainties.
The positive jobs figures add to other recent signs of economic resilience. Data released earlier in the week showed that Canadian exports increased for the fourth consecutive month in May, supporting the view that the economy rebounded in the second quarter after contracting for two straight quarters.
Market Reaction
AdThe loonie strengthened by 0.3% to trade at 1.4125 per U.S. dollar, which is equivalent to 70.80 U.S. cents. This marked its highest point since June 19. The currency was on track for a 0.5% weekly gain, breaking a five-week streak of declines.
Implications for Bank of Canada
The strong economic data is likely to reinforce the Bank of Canada's current monetary policy stance. According to a Reuters poll, the central bank is widely expected to hold its key overnight interest rate at 2.25% at its upcoming meeting on July 15. The poll indicates that policymakers are anticipated to maintain that level well into next year as inflation pressures remain contained and the economy shows signs of a gradual recovery.
