Canadian Dollar Hits 3-Week High After Strong June Jobs Report

The Canadian dollar strengthened to a three-week high against its U.S. counterpart on Friday, propelled by a government report showing the domestic economy added significantly more jobs than forecast in June.
Labor Market Exceeds Expectations
Canada’s economy created 18,200 net new jobs in June, easily surpassing analyst estimates of 10,000, according to official data cited by Investing.com. The unemployment rate also improved, declining to 6.5%, suggesting continued momentum in the Canadian labor market despite ongoing economic uncertainty.
The positive employment figures add to other signs of economic resilience. Data released earlier in the week showed that Canadian exports increased for the fourth consecutive month in May, providing further evidence that the economy likely rebounded in the second quarter after two straight quarters of contraction.
Market Reaction
In response to the strong data, the Canadian dollar, often called the loonie, gained ground on the greenback. Key currency movements included:
Ad- The loonie traded 0.3% higher at 1.4125 per U.S. dollar, or 70.80 U.S. cents.
- This marked the currency's strongest valuation against the U.S. dollar since June 19.
- For the week, the Canadian dollar advanced 0.5%, snapping a five-week losing streak.
Bank of Canada Outlook
The robust employment report may reinforce the Bank of Canada's current monetary policy stance. Strong economic indicators can reduce the pressure on the central bank to consider interest rate cuts to stimulate growth.
A recent Reuters poll indicated that economists expect the Bank of Canada will hold its key overnight rate steady at 2.25% at its upcoming meeting on July 15 and maintain that level well into next year, as inflation pressures are seen as largely contained.
