Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Gains 1.17% on Materials and Energy Strength

Summary
The S&P/TSX Composite index closed higher on Tuesday, fueled by a rally in the Materials and Energy sectors amid rising commodity prices. The main Canadian benchmark saw broad-based gains as market volatility declined.
Canada's main stock index, the S&P/TSX Composite, finished Tuesday's trading session with a strong gain of 1.17%, according to market data. The advance was primarily driven by a rally in resource-linked sectors as key commodity prices moved higher.
Broad-Based Rally Lowers Volatility
The positive sentiment was widespread across the Toronto Stock Exchange, with advancing stocks outnumbering decliners 572 to 389, while 81 ended unchanged. This broad participation suggests solid investor confidence during the session.
Reflecting the calmer market tone, the S&P/TSX 60 VIX, a key measure of implied volatility, fell sharply by 8.90% to a reading of 14.13. A lower VIX reading typically indicates reduced investor anxiety and expectations of more stable market conditions ahead.
Sector and Stock Highlights
Gains were led by the Materials, Energy, and Information Technology sectors. The rally in materials and energy stocks directly correlated with higher prices for precious metals and crude oil.
Among the top individual performers on the index were:
Ad- Celestica Inc. (TSX:CLS), which surged 11.12%.
- Discovery Silver Corp (TSX:DSV), which added 10.49%.
- HudBay Minerals Inc (TSX:HBM), climbing 10.47%.
On the downside, notable decliners included Thomson Reuters Corp (TSX:TRI), which fell 4.72%, and Constellation Software Inc. (TSX:CSU), which was down 4.39%.
Commodities and Currencies
The rally in resource stocks was supported by significant moves in the commodities market. August Gold Futures rose 1.80% to settle at $4,088.22 a troy ounce.
Energy prices also saw robust gains, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil for September delivery climbing 2.52% to $84.56 a barrel. The global benchmark, Brent crude, increased by 2.45% to trade at $91.41 a barrel. In currency markets, the Canadian dollar saw modest changes, while the US Dollar Index Futures edged up 0.23%.
