Background

Shares of Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) climbed 2.4% in pre-market trading after the electronic design automation software maker reported strong third-quarter 2026 results, raised its full-year outlook for the third time, and announced a major new capital return plan.

Strong Q3 Results and Upgraded Forecast

For the third quarter, Cadence reported non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.11, exceeding the analyst consensus of $2.04. Revenue for the period grew 22% year-over-year to $1.633 billion, also beating the estimated $1.61 billion. The company attributed the strong performance to broad-based demand, particularly from artificial intelligence applications.

CFO John Wall noted that the company saw "strong double-digit growth across all product categories, driven by growing momentum from AI-driven designs." He added that a record backlog of $8.2 billion positions Cadence for a strong finish to the year. In a sign of confidence, the company lifted its full-year 2026 guidance to a revenue range of $6.387 billion to $6.417 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $8.37 to $8.43, both comfortably above prior consensus.

The company's board of directors authorized an additional $2.5 billion for its share repurchase program. This new authorization comes after Cadence already bought back $400 million of its stock during the third quarter, signaling management's conviction in the company's value.

Strategically, Cadence also unveiled its Maestro AI Model Portfolio, a suite of specialized AI models for semiconductor design developed in collaboration with Nvidia. The company stated the new models demonstrated up to a 30% improvement in design quality and up to five times greater token efficiency compared to general-purpose AI models, reinforcing its position as a key enabler of advanced chip development.

Market Reaction

The pre-market stock gain was driven by company-specific news, as the broader S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes were trading flat. Following the report, Morgan Stanley analyst Lee Simpson maintained a Buy rating and a $400 price target on the stock, viewing the earnings beat, raised guidance, and AI momentum as supportive of the firm's positive thesis.
