C3.ai Sees Massive Options Volume, But Data Points to Complex Repositioning, Not Bullish Bets

Unusually heavy call volume in C3.ai Inc. (AI) on Friday suggests sophisticated traders are reshuffling positions following the company's earnings report, rather than making a clear directional bet on the stock. While the headline figures appear overwhelmingly bullish, a deeper look at the trade structure and volatility data tells a more nuanced story of risk management.
A Closer Look at the Options Flow
By the afternoon of Sept. 4, 2026, C3.ai's options volume was heavily skewed toward calls. Data showed 189,074 calls traded against just 12,331 puts, a ratio of more than 15-to-1. The stock was trading at $10.46, down about 4% on the day.
However, market analysis indicates the largest trades were not simple purchases of calls. Instead, the volume was concentrated in large, multi-leg packages, which are characteristic of complex spreads or calendar trades. These included:
- 120,000 contracts across calls with strikes from $10.50 to $11.50, using Sept. 4 and Sept. 11 expirations.
- 37,600 contracts using similar expirations and extending to the $12 strike.
This type of structured trading inflates total volume figures and is often used to define risk or capitalize on changes in volatility, rather than to speculate on the stock's direction.
Post-Earnings Volatility Shift
AdThe activity follows C3.ai's Sept. 2 earnings report, which beat analyst estimates on both earnings per share and revenue. Despite the beat, the company's revenue was down 25% year-over-year, presenting a mixed signal to the market.
A key factor driving the options activity is a sharp decline in implied volatility, a measure of expected price swings. Three-month implied volatility fell 5.00 percentage points to 63.80%, a typical "volatility crush" after the uncertainty of an earnings event has passed. This shift creates an incentive for traders to close old positions and establish new ones in a different volatility environment.
Ambiguous Market Signals
Despite the high call volume, other indicators point to continued caution. The 90/110 skew, which measures the relative cost of bearish puts versus bullish calls, rose 1.87 points to +2.46. This suggests that demand for downside protection remained firm.
Without confirmation from post-trade open interest data, the most likely interpretation is that traders are adjusting, closing, or rolling existing positions. The concentrated activity around the $10.50 to $12.00 strike prices points to a strategic reshuffling after a major catalyst, not a new wave of institutional conviction in a rally.
