BYD to Launch Electric Truck in Europe, Plans Local Production

Summary
Chinese EV giant BYD announced plans to introduce its first heavy-duty electric truck in Europe next year and aims to eventually manufacture all its European-sold vehicles locally, a move that could circumvent potential import tariffs.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is set to enter the European commercial vehicle market, announcing plans to launch its first heavy-duty truck in the region next year. The company also signaled its long-term intention to establish local manufacturing operations for all vehicles sold in Europe.
Strategic Expansion
The announcement was made by Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president and head of international business, at the IAA trade fair in Hanover on Monday. Li stated that the company's long-term goal is to produce all vehicles sold in Europe locally.
To support its entry into the commercial sector, BYD intends to offer fleet operators a comprehensive service package. This support ecosystem is expected to include:
- Financing options
- Solar-powered charging infrastructure
- A network of workshops with mobile roadside assistance
AdNavigating Trade Tensions
Establishing local manufacturing in Europe would be a strategic move to bypass potential import duties on trucks. This plan comes as established European manufacturers, such as Traton’s (ETR:8TRA) MAN brand, have reportedly urged the European Union to impose tariffs on Chinese electric trucks.
These calls for new tariffs mirror those already applied to Chinese-made electric passenger vehicles, reflecting growing competition and trade friction in the EV sector. By producing within the bloc, BYD could mitigate this significant financial and political risk.
