British Pound Holds Near Multi-Week Highs as Dollar Trades Sideways Ahead of Fed Minutes

Summary

The British pound traded with little change, holding close to its strongest level since mid-June as a quiet U.S. data calendar kept the dollar range-bound. Investors are looking ahead to the release of the Federal Reserve's meeting minutes for new policy signals.

Background

The British pound held steady near multi-week highs on Tuesday as the U.S. dollar remained in a narrow range, with currency markets seeing limited action ahead of key policy minutes from the Federal Reserve due on Wednesday.

Quiet Trading Dominates Markets

In early trading, the GBP/USD currency pair slipped a marginal 0.04% to $1.3382, remaining just below a recent peak that marked its strongest level since mid-June. The euro also saw muted activity, with the EUR/USD pair easing 0.10% to $1.1430.

Market volatility was contained by a light U.S. economic data calendar, leading investors to adopt a wait-and-see approach. The primary focus is now on the forthcoming minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which traders will scrutinize for fresh clues on the central bank's interest rate trajectory.

Dollar Supported by Rate Outlook

According to analysis from ING, the U.S. dollar's high yield continues to make it an unattractive candidate for short-selling in the current environment. "We argued yesterday that markets probably require a convincing narrative to short the high-yielding dollar in such a favourable environment for carry," said Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING.

ING does not anticipate a dovish surprise from the FOMC minutes, suggesting the Dollar Index (DXY) is likely to remain closer to the 101.0 level. This view was reinforced by comments on Monday from Fed Governor Christopher Waller, who noted that risks to the economic outlook "have flipped on the hawkish side."

UK Housing Data Shows Modest Rebound

On the domestic front, the Lloyds' house price index was the main data release in the U.K. The report showed a modest recovery in the housing market, with average prices rising 0.2% in June, snapping three consecutive months of softness.

On an annual basis, price growth ticked up slightly to 0.6% from 0.5%. "Mortgage rates have eased from their recent highs, offering some encouragement to those considering a move," said Amanda Bryden, head of mortgages at Lloyds, who also noted that affordability remains a significant challenge.
