Background

Brinker International (NYSE: EAT) stock surged more than 8% in morning trading after the parent company of Chili's Grill & Bar posted stronger-than-expected fiscal first-quarter 2027 earnings and raised its full-year financial forecast.

The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.77, decisively beating the Wall Street consensus of $2.42. Revenue for the quarter came in between $1.47 billion and $1.48 billion, ahead of the estimated $1.45 billion and representing year-over-year growth of approximately 9.4%.

Following the strong results, Brinker raised its full-year fiscal 2027 guidance. The company now projects:

The standout driver of the quarter was the continued strength of the Chili’s brand, which recorded its 22nd consecutive quarter of comparable restaurant sales growth. Same-store sales at Chili's rose 10.1%, an impressive figure as it lapped a 21% gain from the same period a year ago.

The sales growth was fueled by a 6.4% increase in customer traffic, with menu pricing contributing the remaining 3.7%. CEO Kevin Hochman attributed the momentum to "industry leading value, world class marketing, and continued investments in operations." The company's financial health also improved, with operating margin expanding to 10.2% from 8.7% a year earlier and free cash flow nearly doubling to $105.7 million.

Market Reaction

Investors reacted positively to the comprehensive beat-and-raise report, sending shares to a session high of $214.36. The stock's advance was entirely company-specific, as it occurred against the backdrop of a largely flat broader market, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq trading near unchanged.
