Bitget to Acquire Licensed Thai Crypto Exchange from GMO Internet Group

Cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has reached an agreement to acquire GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand), a licensed digital asset trading and brokerage platform, in a move to secure a compliant foothold in the Thai market. The acquisition is part of Bitget's broader strategy to accelerate its expansion across Southeast Asia.
The Acquisition Details
Under the terms of the deal, all shares held by existing stakeholders, including Japan's GMO Internet Group and its subsidiary GMO-Z.com Holdings (Thailand), will be sold to BTGT Management (Thailand), an entity in which Bitget holds an interest. The specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The completion of the acquisition is contingent on regulatory approval, including clearance for the change of control from relevant authorities. Once the deal is finalized, Bitget plans to offer its trading platform services to Thai users through the locally operated and licensed exchange.
Strategic Push into a Regulated Market
AdThis acquisition provides Bitget with direct entry into a market with a clear regulatory framework. In Thailand, digital asset exchanges are required to obtain a license from the country's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Thai authorities have previously taken steps to block access to several unlicensed offshore platforms, highlighting the strategic importance of operating through a locally regulated entity. According to a report from Investing.com, Bitget is continuing to evaluate further expansion opportunities in the Southeast Asian region.
Bitget reportedly serves over 125 million users globally, offering a range of services that include trading in cryptocurrencies, tokenized stocks, ETFs, and commodities.
