Bitcoin Surpasses $77,500 as SEC Tokenization Rule Overshadows Legislative Setback

Summary
Bitcoin's price recovered to over $77,500, with investors focusing on a new SEC rule for tokenized securities rather than the recent failure of the Clarity Act in Congress. Broader crypto markets also advanced amid improved risk sentiment.
Bitcoin's price climbed past $77,500 on Friday, erasing most of its weekly losses as a positive regulatory development from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission outweighed a recent legislative failure in Congress. The world's largest cryptocurrency rose 1.4% to $77,560.9 by 02:17 ET (06:17 GMT), according to data from Investing.com.
SEC Greenlights Tokenized Securities
The rally gained momentum after the SEC introduced a five-year exemption on Thursday allowing for the trading of blockchain-based securities, often called "tokenized" stocks. These digital assets, which represent ownership of traditional stocks and trade on a blockchain, could see wider adoption under the new framework.
This move is seen by market participants as a significant step toward integrating digital assets with traditional finance. It also aligns with the SEC's stated goal of eventually facilitating 24-hour stock trading, a feature inherent to blockchain technology.
Market Shrugs Off Legislative Failure
The SEC's action provided a boost to market confidence, helping investors look past the recent failure of the Clarity Act in the U.S. Senate. Following the bill's defeat, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins had indicated that the agency would proceed with its own regulatory approvals, a sentiment now supported by the tokenization exemption.
AdHowever, some analysts caution that regulations established by agencies without congressional legislation can be vulnerable to future political changes and legal challenges. They argue that only an act of Congress can create a lasting and stable regulatory environment for the digital asset industry.
Altcoins Advance on Broad Optimism
Broader cryptocurrency markets also advanced, supported by improved risk appetite across global markets. Falling oil prices, a dip in U.S. Treasury yields, and dovish signals from the Bank of Japan contributed to the positive sentiment.
Alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, posted strong gains, in some cases outpacing Bitcoin. The SEC's tokenization rule is considered particularly beneficial for smart-contract platforms that already support such assets.
- Ether (ETH) rose 1.8% to $2,485.0.
- Solana (SOL) jumped 5.9%.
- Cardano (ADA) rallied 8%.
- BNB gained 3.8%.
