Background

Bitcoin's price climbed nearly 2% to surpass the $63,000 mark on Thursday, as an apparent de-escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions improved investor risk appetite and pushed oil prices lower. The move reversed a sell-off from the previous session, which was triggered by more hostile rhetoric between the two nations.

By 17:09 ET, Bitcoin was trading at $63,352.8, up 1.9% on the day, according to Investing.com data. The rally was part of a broader market shift towards risk assets after President Donald Trump stated that Iran had contacted Washington to "make a deal," cooling fears of a wider military conflict that had recently pushed oil prices to three-week highs.

Market Structure Shows Resilience

Analysts noted that the recovery highlights a potential shift in market behavior. The rebound from oversold conditions, rather than an extension of losses, contrasts with the trend in the second quarter where macroeconomic shocks typically drove capital out of the crypto sector.

"The resilience is notable," said Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch, in a note. He pointed to several on-chain and derivatives metrics suggesting a more fundamentally sound rally:

Sample IUX Markets – In-articleAd
  • Spot-Driven Demand: Bitcoin futures open interest has declined to around $30 billion, according to Glassnode, even as prices recovered. This suggests the move is being driven by spot buyers rather than traders adding leveraged positions.
  • Lower Volatility Expected: The 30-day implied volatility index has fallen, indicating that traders anticipate calmer market conditions ahead.
  • Shrinking Exchange Supply: The supply of Bitcoin on centralized exchanges has dropped to 6.6% of circulating supply, its lowest level since 2017. Historically, sustained declines in exchange balances have preceded bull markets by reducing available selling pressure.

Macro Factors and Broader Crypto Market

Beyond geopolitics, market participants were also assessing minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting. Kalchev noted the minutes "struck a more divided and less hawkish tone than markets feared," which may have provided an additional tailwind for assets like Bitcoin.

The positive sentiment was reflected across the digital asset market. Other major cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, also posted gains. Ethereum, the second-largest crypto, added 0.6% to trade at $1,749.50, while other tokens including XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin also ticked higher.
