Bitcoin Surges Past $81,000 as Crypto ETFs Attract Nearly $900 Million Inflow

A surge of institutional capital has propelled major cryptocurrencies to new highs, with Bitcoin (BTC) climbing above $81,000 and Ethereum (ETH) crossing the $2,500 mark. The rally was fueled by nearly $900 million in net inflows into U.S. spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs), marking a powerful resurgence of investor demand after a period of volatility.
Inflows Signal Renewed Institutional Confidence
Data compiled by Woofun AI shows that Wall Street's renewed interest was highly concentrated in the largest digital assets. The influx on Thursday, September 4, marked one of the most significant single-day capital movements of the year.
- Bitcoin ETFs attracted the lion's share, pulling in $730.8 million in net new funds, the third-largest single-day inflow for the category in 2026.
- Ethereum ETFs saw total net inflows of $141.4 million.
- BlackRock's (BLK) ETHA fund and Fidelity's FETH fund were the primary beneficiaries, collectively attracting $137.2 million, underscoring the dominance of major asset managers in the space.
Market Dynamics and a Major Short Squeeze
The massive capital injection significantly impacted market structure, absorbing substantial selling pressure and driving spot prices higher even as U.S. and Japanese government bond yields rose, according to Simon-Peter Massabni, head of business development at XS.com. The rally was amplified by a severe short squeeze.
AdAs prices climbed, Bitcoin futures open interest swelled to over $57 billion, its highest level since May. This high-leverage environment led to the liquidation of more than $260 million in short positions, marking the most significant squeeze since August 21. Analysts caution that this level of leverage also increases the risk of a sudden price reversal and a cascade of forced selling.
A Volatile but Positive Trend
Thursday's record inflows followed a period of choppy trading. Bitcoin ETFs had recorded an outflow of $236.5 million on September 1, followed by a modest $101.1 million inflow on September 2. Similarly, Ethereum funds saw a $48.2 million outflow on September 2, which ended a 12-day streak of consecutive inflows, before rebounding strongly.
While the trend is decidedly positive, the recent volatility suggests it is too early to confirm whether this marks the beginning of a sustained accumulation cycle by institutional investors, according to the Woofun AI report.
