Background

Bitcoin's price extended its decline on Tuesday, falling amid a broader deterioration in market risk sentiment. The cryptocurrency faced dual headwinds from escalating geopolitical tensions following U.S. military strikes against Iran and a concurrent sell-off in major technology stocks.

By 18:04 ET (22:04 GMT), Bitcoin was trading down 1.4% at approximately $63,305.0, according to market data. The move reflects a classic risk-off pattern, where investors tend to shed more speculative assets during periods of heightened uncertainty.

Geopolitical and Market Pressures

The negative sentiment was largely fueled by news that the U.S. military had launched retaliatory strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the action was in response to attacks on three commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Such geopolitical flare-ups typically drive investors away from volatile assets and can lead to instability in global markets, with oil prices reportedly spiking more than 5% on the news.

Adding to the pressure was a slide in the technology sector. The sell-off was partly attributed to investor concerns that the artificial intelligence-driven rally in tech stocks had become overextended, sparked by preliminary guidance from Samsung Electronics. Cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, have often shown a high correlation with tech-heavy stock indices like the Nasdaq.

Despite the broad market weakness, data on U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) showed signs of renewed institutional interest. According to data compiled by SoSoValue, these funds recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday, building on the $221.7 million of inflows seen on July 2.

This marks a significant reversal from late June, when the funds experienced nearly $2.4 billion in net outflows over several sessions. The renewed buying suggests some investors may be using the price dip as a purchasing opportunity. Market participants are now looking ahead to the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday for further clues on the U.S. interest rate outlook.

Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Lower

The downturn was reflected across the broader cryptocurrency market, with most major altcoins also trading in the red.

  • Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 1.8% to $1,773.32.
  • XRP slipped 3.1%.
  • Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) lost 2% and 5.5%, respectively.
  • Meme token Dogecoin (DOGE) shed 3.9%.
