Bitcoin Slips Below $64,000 as Geopolitical Tensions, Tech Sell-Off Dampen Risk Appetite

Bitcoin (BTC) declined on Tuesday, pressured by a deteriorating risk sentiment across global markets following U.S. retaliatory strikes against Iran and a sell-off in major technology stocks. The world's largest cryptocurrency fell 1.4% to $63,305.0 by 18:04 ET (22:04 GMT), reflecting broader investor caution.
Geopolitical Headwinds
The primary catalyst for the risk-off mood was the U.S. military's announcement of strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the action was a response to recent attacks on three commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had earlier reported the attacks, subsequently raising its threat level for the region to "severe."
Geopolitical escalations of this nature typically prompt investors to move away from assets perceived as high-risk, such as cryptocurrencies, and into traditional safe havens. The tensions were also reflected in energy markets, where oil prices surged more than 5% on Tuesday.
Broader Market Pressure
Adding to the negative sentiment was a slide in technology stocks, partly triggered by guidance from Samsung Electronics. While the company forecast a record profit, the outlook failed to ease investor concerns that the artificial intelligence-driven rally in the tech sector may have become overextended. Bitcoin's price action is often correlated with high-growth tech stocks, and weakness in the Nasdaq can spill over into crypto markets.
AdDespite the day's price drop, institutional demand via spot Bitcoin ETFs has shown recent improvement. According to data from SoSoValue, U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin funds recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday, building on $221.7 million of inflows on July 2. This marks a reversal from a week of significant outflows in late June that totaled nearly $2.4 billion.
Altcoins Follow Bitcoin Lower
The downturn was felt across the broader cryptocurrency market, with most major altcoins tracking Bitcoin's decline.
- Ethereum (ETH): Fell 1.8% to $1,773.32.
- XRP: Slipped 3.1% to $1.1117.
- Solana (SOL): Lost 2.0%.
- Cardano (ADA): Dropped 5.5%.
