Background

Bitcoin's price fell more than 2% on Wednesday, dropping below the $63,000 level as a flight from risk assets intensified following renewed military strikes between the U.S. and Iran and the release of hawkish Federal Reserve meeting minutes.

By 17:38 ET (21:38 GMT), Bitcoin was trading down 2.1% at $62,115.3, retreating from a high above $64,600 reached earlier in the week, according to Investing.com data.

Middle East Tensions Spark Risk-Off Sentiment

Investor risk appetite soured after the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran in what it called retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with strikes of its own, escalating the conflict. At a NATO summit, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that a ceasefire was now "over" and warned that Iran would "probably" be hit "hard again tonight."

The geopolitical instability sent shockwaves through financial markets, prompting a sell-off in speculative assets like cryptocurrencies. In a classic sign of market stress, oil prices surged, with Brent crude futures briefly topping $80 a barrel for the first time since June 22.

Hawkish Fed Minutes Add to Headwinds

Adding to market pressure, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting revealed significant uncertainty among policymakers regarding the path of monetary policy. The debate over interest rates appeared evenly divided, with a few participants advocating for an immediate rate hike to combat persistent inflation.

Policymakers noted that high inflation was partly due to energy supply shocks from the Middle East conflict. An environment of higher interest rates typically weighs on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, as it increases the opportunity cost of holding them compared to interest-bearing instruments.

Broader Market Impact and Investor Flows

The downturn was not isolated to Bitcoin, as most alternative cryptocurrencies also declined. Key market movements included:

  • Ethereum (ETH): Lost 2.1% to trade at $1,735.98.
  • XRP: Declined 2.2% to $1.0888.
  • Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA): Both shed 4.5%.

Despite the negative price action, institutional demand showed some resilience. Data from SoSoValue indicated that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded three consecutive days of net inflows as of Tuesday. These inflows have helped counter a recent trend of withdrawals, though weekly flows remained negative overall.
