Background

Bitcoin's price fell more than 2% on Wednesday, dropping below the $63,000 mark as a flight to safety gripped global markets. The downturn was fueled by a significant escalation in tensions between the U.S. and Iran, coupled with the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes that revealed deep uncertainty over the path of U.S. monetary policy.

By 17:38 ET (21:38 GMT), Bitcoin was trading down 2.1% at $62,115.3, retreating from a high above $64,600 reached earlier in the week, according to data from Investing.com.

Risk-Off Sentiment Spikes

Investor appetite for riskier assets soured after the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran in response to attacks on commercial oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated with its own strikes, and President Donald Trump stated at a NATO summit that a recent ceasefire was now "over."

The geopolitical turmoil sent shockwaves through commodity markets, with Brent crude oil futures briefly surging above $80 a barrel for the first time since late June. The U.S. also revoked a license that permitted the sale of Iranian oil, signaling a harder economic stance that could further destabilize the region.

Hawkish Fed Minutes Add Pressure

Adding to market headwinds, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting highlighted a deeply divided committee. While officials noted high uncertainty, the record showed a debate over whether to raise interest rates immediately to combat persistent inflation, which has been partly fueled by energy shocks from the Middle East conflict.

According to the minutes, "almost all" participants agreed that "some policy firming would likely be warranted" if inflation remained elevated. Higher interest rate environments typically dampen the appeal of speculative, non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies, as they increase the opportunity cost of holding them compared to interest-bearing instruments.

Broader Crypto Market Declines

Most major alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, followed Bitcoin's downward trajectory.

  • Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 2.1% to $1,735.98.
  • XRP declined by 2.2%.
  • Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) each shed approximately 4.5%.

Despite the daily price drop, institutional demand showed some resilience. Data from SoSoValue indicated that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs had recorded three consecutive days of net inflows as of Tuesday, partially reversing a recent trend of heavy withdrawals.
