Bitcoin Slides Below $63,000 as Geopolitical Tensions and Fed Uncertainty Weigh on Markets

Bitcoin's price fell more than 2% on Wednesday, slipping to $62,115.3 as escalating military conflict between the U.S. and Iran soured investor risk appetite. Hawkish undertones from the Federal Reserve's latest meeting minutes added to the downward pressure on speculative assets.
Geopolitical Tensions Spark Risk-Off Sentiment
Market sentiment weakened significantly after the U.S. military launched strikes against Iran in retaliation for attacks on commercial oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran responded with strikes of its own, leading President Donald Trump to declare that a recent ceasefire was "over."
The heightened conflict in a critical region for global energy supplies triggered a classic flight-to-safety trade, pressuring risk assets like cryptocurrencies. In a sign of market anxiety, Brent crude futures, the international oil benchmark, briefly surged above $80 a barrel for the first time since late June, according to market data.
Fed Minutes Reveal Policy Division
Compounding the geopolitical concerns, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s June 16-17 meeting revealed "high uncertainty" among policymakers regarding the future path of interest rates. The summary showed a deeply divided debate, with a few officials making a case for raising interest rates immediately to combat persistent inflation.
Higher interest rate environments typically weigh on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, as they increase the opportunity cost of holding them over income-generating investments like government bonds. The minutes confirmed that the central bank remains concerned about inflation, which could warrant further policy firming.
AdBroader Crypto Market Declines
The negative sentiment was felt across the digital asset market, with most major alternative cryptocurrencies tracking Bitcoin's decline. The sell-off erased gains from earlier in the week when Bitcoin had traded above $64,600.
Other major cryptocurrencies also posted losses:
- Ethereum (ETH): Fell 2.1% to $1,735.98
- XRP: Declined 2.2% to $1.0888
- Solana (SOL): Dropped by approximately 4.5%
Despite the broad sell-off, data from SoSoValue showed U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a third consecutive day of net inflows on Tuesday. This suggests some institutional demand remains resilient, though overall weekly flows for the funds were still negative after heavy withdrawals in prior sessions.
