Background

Bitcoin rebounded on Thursday, erasing the previous day's losses as a perceived easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East improved investor sentiment and weighed on oil prices. The world's largest cryptocurrency rose 1.9% to trade at $63,352.8 by 17:09 ET (21:09 GMT), according to data from Investing.com.

Geopolitical Shifts Drive Market Mood

The rally followed a nearly 2% decline in the prior session after President Donald Trump had signaled an escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict. However, sentiment shifted after the president told reporters that Iran had made contact and wanted to "make a deal so badly," which traders interpreted as a sign of potential de-escalation. This risk-on mood benefited assets like Bitcoin while causing oil prices, which had recently hit three-week highs, to decline.

Spot Demand Supports Rally

Analysts noted the resilience of the recovery, suggesting a potential shift in market behavior. "The resilience is notable: crypto sold off on the initial escalation headlines but rallied from oversold territory rather than extending losses -- a behavioral shift from the pattern that defined much of Q2," said Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch.

Derivatives data suggests the move was driven by underlying demand rather than speculative leverage. Key points from market analysis include:

  • Bitcoin futures open interest has fallen to around $30 billion, according to Glassnode, even as prices recovered.
  • This indicates traders are reluctant to add leveraged exposure, meaning the rally is primarily supported by spot demand.
  • An on-chain signal shows the supply of Bitcoin on centralized exchanges has fallen to its lowest level since 2017, at approximately 6.6% of circulating supply, which historically reduces selling pressure.

Fed Minutes and Altcoin Performance

Investors were also processing minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting. The summary showed a divided committee, with some officials arguing for an immediate interest rate hike while most saw inflation returning to the Fed's 2% target. Kalchev noted the minutes "struck a more divided and less hawkish tone than markets feared."

Most major alternative cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, followed Bitcoin's positive momentum. Ethereum (ETH) added 0.6% to trade at $1,749.50, while Solana (SOL) rose 1.2% and XRP climbed 0.6%.
