Background

Bitcoin rose on Wednesday, climbing back above the key $60,000 psychological level after suffering a deep quarterly loss. The digital asset gained nearly 4% to trade around $60,807, recovering from an earlier session low of $57,803, according to data from Investing.com.

A Rebound Amidst Bearish Sentiment

The modest daily gain comes just a day after Bitcoin closed out a difficult quarter, sliding 14% in the three months ending in June. The token's year-to-date losses now stand at approximately 32%, and it remains more than 50% below its all-time high.

The recent weakness has been driven by several macroeconomic factors. A hawkish stance from the U.S. Federal Reserve has heightened expectations for higher interest rates, which increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like cryptocurrencies and dampens investor appetite.

Institutional Outflows Accelerate

A primary headwind for Bitcoin has been significant selling pressure from institutional investors, particularly through U.S. spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These investment vehicles suffered their largest monthly outflows on record in June, with investors pulling a net $4.5 billion, according to data from SoSoValue. This selling has extended for several consecutive weeks, signaling cooling institutional demand.

Reflecting this cautious sentiment, analysts at Citi recently cut their 12-month price target for Bitcoin to $82,000 from a previous forecast of $112,000. The bank cited negative ETF flows, stalled U.S. crypto legislation, and a broader market rotation into artificial intelligence-related assets as key concerns.

Broader Crypto Market Follows

Other major cryptocurrencies, or altcoins, also posted gains on Wednesday, tracking Bitcoin's upward momentum. Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, climbed 3.8%, while other tokens like Solana and Cardano saw even larger percentage increases.

Despite the daily relief rally, the broader market remains under pressure from the same macroeconomic and regulatory uncertainties affecting Bitcoin. Investors continue to monitor central bank policy and institutional fund flows for signs of a more sustainable shift in market sentiment.
