Background

Bitcoin reclaimed the key $60,000 level on Wednesday, staging a partial recovery after a difficult quarter for the digital asset market. The modest gain comes after the leading cryptocurrency logged a 14% loss in the June quarter, a period marked by persistent institutional selling and mounting macroeconomic pressures.

Record ETF Outflows Pressure Prices

Bitcoin's recent weakness has been closely tied to significant capital flight from U.S. spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These investment vehicles, which launched in January, have been a key barometer of institutional sentiment.

According to SoSoValue data, the ETFs experienced their largest-ever monthly withdrawal in June, with investors pulling a net $4.5 billion. The selling was widespread, with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust alone accounting for $3.55 billion of the month's total outflows. The funds were reportedly on track for an eighth consecutive week of net withdrawals.

Macroeconomic Headwinds

Broader market dynamics have also weighed on cryptocurrency sentiment. The U.S. Federal Reserve's hawkish stance on interest rates, signaling the potential for at least one hike this year, has made non-yielding assets like Bitcoin less attractive to investors.

At the same time, analysts note a significant rotation of capital from speculative assets into high-performing artificial intelligence (AI) stocks. This has diverted investment away from the digital asset market as investors favor risk assets with clearer fundamentals.

Analyst Outlook and Price Action

Reflecting the bearish sentiment, Citi recently cut its 12-month price target for Bitcoin to $82,000 from a previous $112,000. The bank cited negative ETF flows and stalled U.S. crypto legislation as key headwinds.

Despite the broader downtrend, Bitcoin showed signs of stabilization on Wednesday, rising 3.7% to trade at $60,807.4 in late U.S. trading. The move followed a brief dip to a 22-month low of $57,803.0 earlier in the day. Other major cryptocurrencies, including Ether and Solana, also posted gains, tracking Bitcoin's recovery.
