Background

Bitcoin rose on Wednesday, climbing back above the key $60,000 level in a partial recovery from a sharp quarterly sell-off. The modest gain comes a day after the world's largest cryptocurrency closed the June quarter with a 14% loss, pressured by expectations for higher-for-longer U.S. interest rates and significant institutional selling.

By 17:55 ET (21:55 GMT), Bitcoin was trading up approximately 3.7% at $60,807.4, rebounding from an intraday low of $57,803.0, according to Investing.com data. Despite the daily uptick, the digital asset remains down 32% year-to-date and is trading more than 50% below its all-time high.

Persistent ETF Outflows Signal Weakening Demand

A primary driver of the recent weakness has been sustained capital flight from U.S.-based spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These investment products, a major catalyst for price gains earlier in the year, are now facing a severe reversal in sentiment.

According to data from SoSoValue, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their largest-ever monthly outflows in June, with investors pulling a total of $4.5 billion. The selling pressure has been consistent, with the funds on track for their eighth consecutive week of net outflows. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), the largest fund by assets, accounted for $3.55 billion of the total outflows in June.

Hawkish Fed and Analyst Downgrades Weigh on Outlook

Broader market sentiment has been dampened by the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance, which has increased the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. The central bank's signals in its June meeting have led investors to price in at least one interest rate hike this year, weighing heavily on risk assets.

Reflecting the cautious outlook, analysts at Citi recently slashed their 12-month price target for Bitcoin to $82,000 from a previous forecast of $112,000. The bank cited several headwinds for the downgrade:

  • Weakening investor demand and negative ETF flows.
  • A rotation by investors from speculative assets into AI-related stocks.
  • Stalled progress on crypto-friendly legislation in the U.S.

In a bear-case scenario, Citi projects Bitcoin could fall as low as $53,000. The bank also revised its 12-month net ETF inflow assumption down to zero from a prior estimate of $10 billion.

Broader Crypto Market Follows Bitcoin's Lead

Other major cryptocurrencies also saw modest gains, tracking Bitcoin's recovery. Ether, the second-largest digital asset, rose 3.8% to trade at $1,631.29. Other altcoins, including Solana and Cardano, also posted gains after suffering steep losses in the previous quarter.
