Bitcoin Rallies Past $81,000, Testing Key On-Chain and Technical Levels

Summary

Bitcoin's price has surged past $81,000, recovering sharply from a recent dip to key support. On-chain metrics and technical analysis point to a critical battle between supply and demand as the cryptocurrency tests significant resistance levels.

Background

Bitcoin (BTC) has demonstrated a strong recovery, rallying from a low of $74,800 to briefly surpass $81,000 on September 18. This price action tests a critical juncture for the market, with on-chain data suggesting a tightening supply dynamic as the key question becomes whether new demand is sufficient to sustain these higher levels.

On the Bitstamp exchange, Bitcoin reached a high of approximately $81,100 before a slight pullback, according to market data. The move represents a significant rebound and places the price back above the cost basis of many active investors, shifting the focus to underlying market strength versus a purely speculative bounce.

Technical Rebound Meets Key Levels

The current price structure is framed by Fibonacci retracement levels based on the August low of approximately $62,600 and the September high near $82,300. The recent rally found strong support at the 38.2% retracement level of $74,800 on September 15 before reversing course.

The subsequent surge pushed BTC decisively above the 23.6% retracement level at $77,700, a critical zone that now needs to hold as support to validate the upward momentum. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) has climbed to around 63, indicating strengthening buying pressure but remaining below the 70 threshold often considered overbought territory.

On-Chain Data Reveals Supply Shift

Analysis of on-chain data provides deeper insight into the market's supply and demand balance. According to data from Glassnode, Bitcoin's 'Realized Price'—which estimates the average acquisition cost of the active BTC supply—stands at approximately $76,700, closely aligning with the key technical support zone near $77,700.

A structural shift in holder behavior is also evident. Data from CryptoQuant cited by Woofun AI indicates that since February, the supply held by Short-Term Holders has decreased from roughly 6 million to 3 million BTC. Conversely, Long-Term Holder supply has grown from 13 million to 16 million BTC. This suggests that more coins are maturing into a dormant state, potentially reducing the readily available supply for trading.

Resistance Ahead and Downside Risks

Looking ahead, Bitcoin faces several key resistance levels derived from on-chain cost basis analysis by Glassnode:

  • ~$80,400: The estimated cost basis for corporate treasuries.
  • ~$82,300: The recent September high, which serves as the primary technical resistance.
  • ~$85,600: The estimated average cost basis for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, a significant psychological and market level.

A daily close above $82,300 would signal a breakout from the current range. However, if the price fails to hold the $77,700 support level, it could risk a deeper pullback toward the $72,500 area, where the 50% Fibonacci retracement level converges with the rising 50-day moving average.
