Bitcoin Price Falters Amid Middle East Tensions, Tech Stock Weakness

Bitcoin's price fell during Tuesday's trading, dropping below the $64,000 level as investors shied away from riskier assets. The decline was driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East following U.S. military strikes against Iran and a concurrent sell-off in major technology stocks.
By 18:04 ET (22:04 GMT), Bitcoin (BTC) was down 1.4% to $63,305.0. The move lower reflects a broader deterioration in investor sentiment, influenced by concerns in both the geopolitical and technology spheres.
Geopolitical Headwinds and Market Sentiment
Investor caution intensified after the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the action was in response to reported attacks on three commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict in the critical shipping lane, which saw oil prices surge more than 5%, prompted a flight to safety and away from assets perceived as high-risk, including cryptocurrencies.
Adding to the pressure, a slide in technology stocks dampened market enthusiasm. The sell-off was partly attributed to investor nervousness that the artificial intelligence rally has become overextended, despite a strong Q2 profit forecast from Samsung Electronics.
ETF Inflows Offer Counterbalance
AdDespite the negative macroeconomic backdrop, institutional demand for Bitcoin showed signs of resilience. U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday, according to data from SoSoValue.
This extends a recent positive trend, following $221.7 million in inflows on July 2. The figures mark a significant reversal from late June, when investors pulled nearly $2.4 billion from the funds amid macroeconomic uncertainty.
Altcoins Track Bitcoin Lower
The negative sentiment was felt across the digital asset market, with most major alternative cryptocurrencies also trading in the red.
- Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 1.8% to $1,773.32.
- Other major tokens including XRP, Solana (SOL), and Cardano (ADA) saw declines of 3.1%, 2%, and 5.5%, respectively.
