Background

Bitcoin's price declined on Tuesday amid a broader shift away from risk assets, with the leading cryptocurrency falling approximately 1.4% to trade around $63,305. The downturn was primarily attributed to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a significant sell-off in the technology sector, which weighed on investor sentiment.

The negative market mood intensified after the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the action was a response to recent attacks on three commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident caused oil prices to spike over 5% and prompted the U.S. to revoke a license authorizing the sale of Iranian crude oil.

Compounding the pressure on cryptocurrencies was a slide in technology stocks. The sell-off was partly triggered by guidance from Samsung Electronics which, despite forecasting a record profit, fueled investor concerns that the artificial intelligence market may be overvalued. This negative sentiment in the tech sector often has a ripple effect on crypto assets.

Despite the price drop, data showed signs of continued institutional demand. U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of $265.7 million on Monday, a reversal from a period of significant outflows in late June. However, this was not enough to offset the wider market pressures.

The broader cryptocurrency market mirrored Bitcoin's losses. Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell by 1.8%, while other major altcoins including XRP, Solana, and Cardano also experienced declines.
