Background

Bitcoin traded with minimal changes over the weekend, holding its ground above the $64,000 level as investors appeared to shrug off geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The cryptocurrency’s stability came after U.S. officials confirmed that shipping through the critical Strait of Hormuz remained open, countering claims of a closure by Iran.

As of Sunday, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $64,188, according to Investing.com data. With traditional financial markets closed, Bitcoin functioned as one of the few liquid assets available for traders to price in the weekend's geopolitical developments. The market showed little of the panic selling often associated with previous regional flare-ups, with investors now awaiting the reopening of oil markets for further signals.

US Regulation and Protocol Debates

Attention within the digital asset space is also turning toward domestic policy and technical matters. In Washington, Senator Cynthia Lummis has renewed her call for Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, a bill designed to establish a clear regulatory framework for digital assets in the U.S. by defining the oversight responsibilities of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Meanwhile, the Bitcoin developer community remains divided over a contentious proposal known as BIP-110, which aims to temporarily restrict non-financial data on the blockchain. The proposal has failed to gain traction among key stakeholders, with support from mining pools remaining below 1%. Prominent figures like Michael Saylor and Adam Back have publicly warned against altering Bitcoin's core consensus rules, suggesting the proposal is unlikely to be activated.

Broader Market and Industry Trends

The broader cryptocurrency market was mostly lower over the weekend. Major altcoins, including XRP, Solana, and Cardano, all posted declines. XRP fell 1.13% to $1.0940, while Solana and Cardano saw losses of 1.41% and nearly 4%, respectively.

Separately, regulators and industry participants are demonstrating increased cooperation on security. In Singapore, police and seven cryptocurrency exchanges, including Coinbase, collaborated on an operation that prevented more than $4.2 million in potential scam-related losses. The effort utilized blockchain analytics to identify and warn potential victims, highlighting a growing trend of public-private partnerships aimed at building trust in the ecosystem.
