Bitcoin Falls Below $63,000 as U.S.-Iran Tensions, Fed Uncertainty Dampen Risk Appetite

Bitcoin (BTC) fell more than 2% on Wednesday, slipping below the $63,000 level as escalating military conflict between the U.S. and Iran triggered a broad flight from risk assets. The downturn was compounded by minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest meeting, which signaled persistent uncertainty over inflation and future interest rate policy.
Geopolitical Pressures Drive Sell-Off
The price of Bitcoin dropped 2.1% to $62,115.3 by late Wednesday trading, retreating from a high above $64,600 reached earlier in the week, according to Investing.com data. The move reflects a classic risk-off sentiment, where investors sell more speculative assets in favor of perceived safe havens during times of instability.
The trigger was a significant escalation in the Middle East, where the U.S. military launched retaliatory strikes against Iran following attacks on commercial oil tankers. Citing the events, U.S. President Donald Trump said a recent ceasefire was "over." The tensions sent oil prices surging, with Brent crude futures briefly topping $80 a barrel, further stoking global inflation concerns.
Hawkish Fed Minutes Add to Headwinds
Adding to market anxiety were the minutes from the Federal Reserve's June policy meeting. The report showed officials were highly uncertain about the economic outlook and held an "evenly divided debate" on the direction of interest rates.
AdWhile some policymakers expected inflation to moderate, many noted that strong demand or supply shocks from the Middle East conflict could keep prices elevated, which would likely warrant "some policy firming." The prospect of higher interest rates is typically a headwind for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, as it makes safer, interest-bearing investments more attractive.
Broader Crypto Market Declines
Despite the negative macro environment, data from SoSoValue showed that U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded three consecutive days of net inflows, suggesting some institutional resilience. However, the broader cryptocurrency market followed Bitcoin lower.
