Background

Bitcoin recovered to trade above $64,000 on Friday, positioning the digital asset for a weekly gain as a rally in technology stocks boosted investor sentiment for risk assets.

The world's largest cryptocurrency rose 1.2% to $64,005.7 by 18:00 ET (22:00 GMT), according to market data. The move puts Bitcoin on track for a weekly increase of more than 2%, reversing losses from earlier in the week that were driven by escalating military tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

Risk Appetite Returns

The cryptocurrency's recovery mirrored a broader advance on Wall Street, where the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite index gained nearly 2% for the week. The rally was fueled by reports that Iran had reached out to the U.S. to seek a deal, easing fears of a wider conflict and causing a retreat in safe-haven assets.

Analysts note that Bitcoin continues to trade largely as a high-beta risk asset, often moving in tandem with equities during periods of improving market sentiment. Continued inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have also provided a key source of institutional demand, helping to support prices during periods of macroeconomic uncertainty.

Broader Crypto Market Mixed

While Bitcoin advanced, performance across the altcoin market was mixed for the week.

  • Ethereum (ETH): The second-largest cryptocurrency rose 2.7% on Friday to $1,795.14, finishing the week up 2.1%.
  • XRP: Gained 0.8% for the day but ended the week with a 2% loss.
  • Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA): Posted weekly losses of 5.2% and 6.6%, respectively.

Regulatory Milestone for Circle

In a significant industry development, stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Financial received final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to operate a national trust bank. The charter permits the company behind USDC to serve as a custodian for its own reserves and hold digital assets for institutional clients under direct federal supervision.

Following the announcement, shares of Circle (CRCL) ended the trading session 5% higher.
