Background

Bitcoin reversed course to climb above $64,000 on Monday, as positive comments from former President Donald Trump helped the market absorb news of a significant sale by a major corporate crypto holder. The leading cryptocurrency rose 1.7% to $64,183.5 in late trading, according to Investing.com data.

Strategy Discloses $216 Million Sale

Initial pressure on the market came after the Michael Saylor-founded company Strategy disclosed in a regulatory filing that it had sold a substantial amount of its bitcoin holdings. The firm reported selling a total of 3,588 bitcoin for proceeds of $216 million.

The sales occurred in two tranches:

  • 1,363 BTC were sold between June 29 and June 30 for $80.8 million, at an average price of $59,256.
  • An additional 2,225 BTC were sold between July 1 and July 5 for $135.2 million, at an average price of $60,773.

Strategy, a top corporate holder of the asset, stated the proceeds were used for preferred stock distributions and to replenish its cash reserves. The company also reported a substantial $8.32 billion loss on its digital asset holdings for the quarter ending June 30, highlighting the impact of price volatility on its balance sheet.

Political Tailwinds and Market Context

Sentiment shifted later in the session following comments from Donald Trump. When asked by reporters if bitcoin might be included in a new government investment initiative, the former president stated, "I’ve become a big crypto guy," adding he was a "fan" and "very much for" the asset class.

This development comes after a strong prior week for Bitcoin, which gained roughly 5% following a softer-than-expected U.S. jobs report that tempered expectations for Federal Reserve rate hikes. A higher interest rate environment typically creates headwinds for speculative assets like cryptocurrencies. Investors are now awaiting the minutes from the Fed's June meeting, due on Wednesday, for further signals on monetary policy.
