Biohaven Shares Fall After RBC Capital Downgrade on Valuation Concerns
Text size
Background

Shares of Biohaven Pharmaceutical Holding Company (NYSE:BHVN) fell on Tuesday after RBC Capital downgraded the stock, citing its significant appreciation this year and a lack of near-term catalysts.

The Downgrade

RBC Capital lowered its rating on Biohaven to 'Sector Perform' from a previous 'Outperform.' The firm also cut its price target on the stock to $19 from $23. Following the announcement, Biohaven's shares traded down 4.2%.

Analyst's Rationale

The primary driver for the downgrade was the stock's performance, which has rallied approximately 100% since its lows earlier in the year, according to RBC analyst Leonid Timashev. The analyst noted that a recent deal for the company's Kv7 program, which was seen as a key catalyst, has now been realized.

While the transaction strengthened Biohaven's balance sheet and provided clarity on future data readouts, its completion removes a key driver for further stock gains. Timashev stated that the firm is taking a more cautious stance due to increased risk exposure and fewer major catalysts over the next 12 months. Specific concerns highlighted by the analyst include:

  • Limited patient data for certain projects
  • Insufficient mechanism validation
  • Potential regulatory uncertainties

Market Outlook

RBC Capital now views the risk/reward profile for Biohaven as more balanced. "With the stock now up ~100% from the lows of the year, we believe this has largely played out," Timashev wrote, explaining that the Kv7 deal's benefits are now priced in.

While the firm acknowledges potential for long-term upside, it expects the stock to perform in line with the broader market in the near term. The downgrade reflects this balanced view and adjustments to the valuation model following the recent transaction.
