BermudAir Orders 10 Airbus A220s to Fuel Caribbean and Central America Expansion

Summary
Startup carrier BermudAir has placed a firm order for 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, a move designed to more than double its route network and replace its existing Embraer fleet by 2030.
BermudAir, a startup carrier operating since 2023, has placed a firm order for 10 Airbus A220-300 aircraft as it embarks on a significant network expansion into new Caribbean and Central American markets. The deal was formally signed at the Farnborough airshow, according to a Reuters report on Wednesday.
Fleet Modernization and Growth
The acquisition of the A220s marks a strategic shift for the airline, which aims to eventually replace its current fleet of Embraer 190 jets. BermudAir stated it plans to add up to 20 A220 aircraft by 2030 to support its long-term growth ambitions.
"The performance characteristics of the A220 enable us to open up more markets and to expand our footprint," said BermudAir CEO and founder Adam Scott in an interview. The A220 family is known for its fuel efficiency and range, making it suitable for the new, longer-haul routes the airline is targeting.
Aggressive Route Expansion
BermudAir plans to more than double its current 11 routes by the end of the year. The expansion focuses on connecting key U.S. hubs with underserved leisure destinations.
AdNew routes announced include:
- Six new routes to Turks and Caicos from Newark, Boston, Baltimore-Washington, Raleigh-Durham, Fort Lauderdale, and St. Petersburg/Tampa.
- Five new routes to Belize.
- Expanded seasonal service to Anguilla.
Market Positioning
While BermudAir faces established competitors like JetBlue, American, and United on trunk routes to New York, many of its planned new routes have less direct competition. The carrier aims to differentiate itself through customer experience, which Scott cited as a key factor in winning over passengers.
The airline also plans to enhance its onboard product by adding Wi-Fi, a feature not available on its current aircraft. This investment in both fleet and services underscores the carrier's strategy to capture a share of the premium leisure travel market.
