BEL 20 Slips 0.45% as Healthcare Sell-Off Weighs on Brussels Market

Brussels' benchmark stock index, the BEL 20, finished lower on Friday, declining by 0.45% as significant losses in major healthcare stocks outweighed gains elsewhere in the market. The session's performance highlights a divergence where weakness in heavily-weighted index components pulled the overall benchmark down.
Healthcare Stocks Lead Decline
The session's negative close was primarily driven by a sell-off in the healthcare sector. According to data from Investing.com, losses were also concentrated in the Beverage and Travel & Leisure sectors.
The worst-performing stock on the index was pharmaceutical company UCB SA (EBR:UCB), which saw its shares fall 4.58%. Fellow biopharmaceutical firm Argen-X (EBR:ARGX) also contributed to the decline, ending the day down 2.06%.
Pockets of Strength
Despite the headline index's negative close, market breadth was positive. More individual stocks on the Brussels Stock Exchange advanced than declined, with 48 risers compared to 36 decliners, while 19 ended the session unchanged. This suggests that the losses were concentrated rather than market-wide.
AdLeading the gainers on the BEL 20 were:
- Aperam SA (AS:APAM): +4.17%
- D’Ieteren NV (EBR:IETB): +3.44%
- Ackermans & Van Haaren NV (EBR:ACKB): +2.93%
Broader Market Context
In the broader commodities market, gold futures for December delivery fell 1.16%. Crude oil prices were mixed, with the October WTI contract down 0.45% while the November Brent contract traded flat. In foreign exchange, the EUR/USD and EUR/GBP pairs were largely unchanged, while the U.S. Dollar Index Futures registered a modest gain of 0.19%.
