Avanza Bank Shares Jump on Record Q2 Profit and Customer Inflows

Summary
The Swedish online brokerage reported a significant earnings beat for the second quarter, citing stronger trading activity and a record influx of new customers amid improving investor sentiment.
Shares of Avanza Bank Holding AB (AVANZ) rallied on Tuesday after the online investment platform announced a sharp increase in second-quarter profitability, beating market expectations with record customer inflows and broad-based revenue growth.
Record Profitability in Q2
Avanza reported an operating profit of SEK 928 million for the second quarter, a substantial increase from the SEK 709 million recorded in the same period a year earlier. According to its interim report, net profit climbed to SEK 795 million, up from SEK 600 million year-over-year.
The strong performance was driven by a significant rise in operating income to SEK 1.33 billion from SEK 1.06 billion. The company attributed the growth to several factors:
- Higher net interest income
- Increased brokerage and fund commission income
- Favorable currency-related income
- A record influx of new customers
AdManagement Commentary and Market Context
CEO Gustaf Unger described the results as "yet another record quarter," noting in the report that investor risk appetite had "strengthened considerably." He added that Avanza is "well positioned as sentiment improves."
The positive results were amplified by a supportive macroeconomic environment, with Sweden's Riksbank holding its policy rate steady. Ahead of the earnings release, Pareto Securities had raised its price target on Avanza to SEK 435, reiterating a "Buy" recommendation.
Avanza's strong performance may set a positive precedent for the Nordic online brokerage sector. Its primary competitor, Nordnet, is scheduled to release its second-quarter results on July 17. Following the news, Avanza's stock rose 2.4% to SEK 383.1, approaching its 52-week high of SEK 407.5.
