Athens General Composite Ends Lower as Energy, Telecoms Stocks Decline

Summary
The benchmark Greek stock index closed down 0.17% on Tuesday, with significant losses in the energy and telecommunications sectors offsetting gains in other areas of the market.
The Athens General Composite index edged lower in Tuesday's trading session, closing down 0.17% as weakness in key sectors weighed on the benchmark. Losses were most pronounced among telecommunications, household goods, and basic resources stocks, according to closing data from the Athens Stock Exchange.
Sector Pressures and Market Breadth
The decline was heavily influenced by the performance of energy companies. Motor Oil Hellas Corinth Refineries SA was among the session's worst performers, falling 4.95%. Similarly, HELLENiQ ENERGY Holdings SA saw its shares decline by 4.80%.
Despite the index's negative close, market breadth was positive, indicating that the decline was not broad-based. Data showed that advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones by a margin of 67 to 48, with 15 stocks ending the session unchanged. This suggests that losses in heavily-weighted index components were the primary driver of the composite's dip.
Standout Performers
AdOn the upside, several companies posted strong gains, limiting the index's overall losses. Key performers included:
- Viohalco SA (VIOH), which surged 6.48%.
- THRACE PLASTICS CO SA (THRr), adding 5.03%.
- Euronext Athens Holding SA (EXCr), which rose 4.03% to reach a 5-year high.
In the broader commodities market, crude oil prices retreated, with the November Brent contract falling below the $100 per barrel mark. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures, a measure of the dollar's strength against a basket of currencies, traded slightly higher.
