Sector and Stock Highlights
The materials, metals, and mining sectors were the primary drivers of the day's gains. Among the session's top individual performers were:
- Zip Co Ltd (ASX:ZIP), which surged 9.49% to close at 3.23.
- Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB), which added 9.24% to end at 2.60.
- Nextdc Ltd (ASX:NXT), which climbed 5.81% to 13.83.
AdConversely, gold mining stocks faced significant pressure as the price of the precious metal declined. Regis Resources Ltd (ASX:RRL) was a top decliner, falling 5.92%, while Evolution Mining Ltd (ASX:EVN) dropped 4.37%. Technology firm Xero Ltd (ASX:XRO) also saw its shares decline by 3.81%.

The weakness in gold stocks coincided with a drop in bullion prices, as August Gold Futures fell 0.92% to $4,032.27 a troy ounce. In contrast, energy markets saw gains, with WTI Crude oil for August delivery rising 0.44% to $79.69 a barrel and the September Brent oil contract increasing 0.68%.
