Background

AI startup Anthropic is reportedly advancing plans for an initial public offering that could occur as soon as November, while simultaneously hiring consulting firm Accenture (ACN) to embed safety assessors within its operations. The dual-track effort aims to demonstrate strong financial momentum to investors while proactively addressing growing public and regulatory concerns over the risks of advanced artificial intelligence.

IPO Plans and Financial Projections

According to people familiar with the matter, Anthropic is preparing for a public listing and may begin its investor roadshow as early as mid-October, targeting a debut on the Nasdaq exchange before the U.S. midterm elections in November. The company confidentially filed its S-1 registration document in June, the sources said.

The potential IPO is supported by staggering revenue growth, driven by enterprise adoption of its Claude AI software. Citing a New York Times report, the company's annualized revenue run rate is projected to exceed $100 billion this year. This marks a significant acceleration from a reported $65 billion run rate at the end of July and $9 billion at the close of 2025.

Reports suggest Anthropic aims to raise up to $100 billion through the IPO at a target valuation of approximately $2 trillion. Chipmaker Nvidia (NVDA) is reportedly in talks to participate as a cornerstone investor with an investment of up to $10 billion.

Proactive Safety Measures

To manage reputational and compliance risks ahead of a public debut, Anthropic announced it will embed Accenture assessors directly into its teams. In a blog post, Anthropic stated these evaluators will have access comparable to its own employees to conduct safety tests, including "red teaming" its latest models to check for vulnerabilities.

This initiative is part of a plan to ensure its technology remains "aligned" with human goals and values. The partnership represents a significant financial commitment, with the two companies expected to invest at least $1 billion in building these safety capabilities. The move follows a call from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for third-party oversight to monitor the development of advanced AI, particularly amid concerns about systems capable of "recursive self-improvement," where AI participates in designing more powerful AI.

Context and Potential Scrutiny

The push for external validation comes as the AI industry faces heightened anxiety over existential risks. The debate was recently amplified by the resignation of an Anthropic researcher who publicly stated AI companies were "gambling with our lives." Anthropic itself recently disclosed that its own Claude chatbot now drives 26% of its AI research and development work, highlighting the accelerating pace of AI-assisted AI creation.

However, the choice of Accenture as a third-party evaluator may draw scrutiny. Accenture has a deep business relationship with Anthropic and other major AI firms, which could raise questions about its independence as an auditor. The consulting giant has previously projected that its business related to key AI partners, including Anthropic and OpenAI, would more than double in the coming year.
