Anthropic Launches Opus 5 AI Model to Offer High Performance at Lower Cost

AI developer Anthropic on Friday launched Opus 5, its latest artificial intelligence model, which the company positions as a more cost-effective option for enterprise clients. The new model reportedly approaches the capabilities of its most powerful offering, Fable 5, but is available at half the price.
A Focus on Efficiency and Accessibility
According to the San Francisco-based startup, Opus 5 is optimized for common business applications such as daily office work and computer programming. The release represents a more efficient version than its predecessor, Opus 4.8, which was introduced in May.
In an interview with Reuters, Anthropic product leader Dianne Penn highlighted the company's rapid development cycle. "We’re building and continue to consistently deliver frontier intelligence and bring that as accessibly as possible with every model generation," Penn said.
Safety and Market Positioning
AdAnthropic noted that Opus 5 has different safety characteristics compared to its flagship model. In the company's testing, Opus 5 was less capable of exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities than Fable 5, allowing for less restrictive safeguards. The startup also stated that Opus 5 was less susceptible to being manipulated into misuse than its other current models.
This distinction is significant in the context of Anthropic's Fable 5, which was released in June and was temporarily made unavailable following U.S. government concerns over its potential for misuse in foreign military intelligence. Penn suggested customers should choose Opus 5 for value and Fable 5 for more complex, "days-long, very autonomous projects."
The Broader AI Landscape
When asked about competing "open-weight" models like Kimi K3 from China-based Moonshot, Penn commented that it "remains to be seen" how they perform on the complex, real-world tasks Anthropic's Claude models are designed for. Unlike proprietary models, open-weight models allow users to download and customize the AI's underlying architecture, a key differentiator in the competitive AI market.
