Anthropic Halts Potential $6B Acquisition of AI Startup Decart, Bloomberg Reports

Artificial intelligence leader Anthropic has walked away from a potential acquisition of the AI startup Decart, according to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg News that cited people familiar with the matter.
The developer of the Claude chatbot had been in discussions for a deal valued at approximately $6 billion, though an agreement had not been finalized.
Deal Scrapped After Due Diligence
Anthropic reportedly explored the transaction and conducted due diligence on Decart before ultimately deciding not to proceed with the acquisition, the sources told Bloomberg. The report noted that while the purchase is off the table, the two companies may still explore other forms of collaboration in the future.
AdStrategic Context and Market Implications
The potential acquisition highlighted the intense pressure AI companies face to control costs. Decart develops specialized software designed to improve the efficiency of computer chips, which can significantly reduce the expense of training and operating large AI models.
For Anthropic, such a deal would have offered a strategic advantage as it increases spending on computing capacity to develop new products. The move to control infrastructure costs is a critical step for the company as it reportedly prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO). The collapse of the deal means Anthropic will need to continue addressing its high compute expenses through other means.
