Anthropic Calls Off Planned Acquisition of AI Startup Decart

AI developer Anthropic has abandoned its plan to acquire the artificial intelligence startup Decart AI, according to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg citing people familiar with the matter. The move halts a potential deal that would have bolstered Anthropic's capabilities in managing the high costs of AI development.
The Collapsed Deal
According to the report, Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, had engaged in acquisition talks and conducted due diligence on Decart. However, the company ultimately decided to walk away from the potential transaction.
Bloomberg had previously reported last month that the two companies had discussed a potential deal, but an agreement was not reached at that time. Decart AI specializes in developing software designed to improve the efficiency of computer chips, thereby reducing the significant costs required to train and run large AI models.
Strategic Context
AdThe potential acquisition was seen as a strategic move for Anthropic to gain more control over its computational resources and infrastructure costs. The AI industry faces mounting expenses related to the powerful hardware needed to advance model development.
This decision comes as Anthropic is significantly increasing its investment in computing power to support its product pipeline and prepare for a potential Initial Public Offering (IPO). Scrapping the acquisition could indicate a shift in its capital allocation strategy as it moves closer to a public market debut.
Future Collaboration Possible
Despite the failed acquisition, the two companies may still explore other avenues for cooperation in the future, the report added. This leaves the door open for potential partnerships, reflecting a common dynamic in the competitive AI landscape where companies often form alliances to access specialized technology without the complexities of a full merger.
