Amazon to Invest Over $100 Million in New Indiana Robotics Facility

Summary
Amazon plans to spend more than $100 million on a new robotics manufacturing plant in Greenwood, Indiana, slated to open by 2028, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) will invest more than $100 million to construct a new robotics-manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana, which is expected to be operational by 2028, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.
Expansion of Robotics Operations
The planned Indiana plant will be Amazon's fourth facility dedicated to producing robots for its logistics network. This development follows a recent announcement for a similar robotics hub in Austin, Texas.
Together, the two new facilities in Indiana and Texas are set to double the e-commerce giant's total robot-manufacturing capacity. This significant expansion underscores the company's long-term strategy of integrating advanced automation into its fulfillment and sorting centers.
AdStrategic Context and Impact
Amazon's focus on robotics has grown substantially since its $775 million acquisition of Kiva Systems in 2012. Over the past decade, the company has deployed more than one million robots across its warehouses to handle tasks such as sorting, lifting, and transporting packages.
The company states that its investments in automation have led to the creation of higher-skilled technical jobs and improved workplace safety. Amazon reports that the use of robotics has helped reduce the rate of recordable workplace injuries by more than 40%. "We’ve deployed over a million robots over the last decade, and in that time, we’ve hired hundreds of thousands of employees that work alongside those robots," said Holly Sullivan, Amazon's vice president of worldwide economic development.
