Amazon Reduces Staff in Artificial General Intelligence Unit to Sharpen Focus

Amazon confirmed on Wednesday it has eliminated some roles within its artificial general intelligence (AGI) group, signaling a strategic realignment as the company intensifies its focus on key AI initiatives. This move follows a much larger round of company-wide layoffs earlier in the year.
Details of the Reduction
While the exact number of employees impacted by the cuts was not disclosed, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the decision in a statement to Reuters. The company framed the move as part of an effort to accelerate progress on its most critical projects.
"We’re sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts," the spokesperson said. "That focus means some difficult decisions, including eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization."
AdStrategic Context
This latest action is part of a broader trend of workforce adjustments at the tech giant, which cut 16,000 jobs across the company in January. The current cuts specifically target the AGI unit, a field dedicated to developing hypothetical AI systems that could surpass human intelligence and operate autonomously.
Despite the reductions, Amazon reiterated its commitment to the field. The spokesperson noted, "We’ve been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we’re working on." The move suggests a reallocation of resources toward more immediate or commercially viable AI applications rather than a complete withdrawal from advanced research.
