Amazon Earmarks $220 Billion for AI Capex, Leveraging Internal Cash Flow

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is undertaking an unprecedented $220 billion capital expenditure plan this year to aggressively expand its artificial intelligence data center infrastructure. The technology and retail giant is distinguishing itself from competitors by primarily using its own substantial cash flow to finance the buildout, according to analysis by Investing.com ahead of the company's next earnings report.
Self-Funded Expansion
While high borrowing costs and massive computing investments are squeezing margins across the tech sector, Amazon is funding its expansion through multiple high-margin internal businesses. The company generated $161.4 billion in operating cash flow over the past twelve months, providing a powerful engine for reinvestment.
Key contributors to this financial strength include:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): The cloud division's revenue grew 36.7% year-over-year to $42.2 billion in its most recent quarterly results, its fastest rate in 18 quarters. AWS now operates at a $169 billion annualized run rate with a 39% operating margin.
- Digital Advertising: This segment has become a significant profit center, expanding 26% year-over-year to $19.8 billion in the second quarter.
- Retail Efficiencies: Improvements in logistics and regionalized fulfillment have also reduced costs and improved liquidity from its core commerce operations.
AdFinancial Health and Outlook
Despite the enormous spending plan, Amazon's balance sheet remains disciplined. The company's gross profit margins have remained above 50% over the trailing twelve months, highlighting durable operating leverage. Management is also exploring creative financing to preserve flexibility, including a potential plan to offload $8 billion of NVIDIA chips into a special purpose vehicle and lease back the capacity.
This ability to fund large-scale AI investments with organic cash generation provides a significant margin of safety. Wall Street analysts remain overwhelmingly constructive on the stock, holding a consensus "Buy" rating and a median price target of $331.72, which points to a potential 34% upside from current levels, according to data cited by Investing.com.
