Alphabet Stock Signals Oversold Condition After 7% Post-Earnings Drop

Alphabet's Class A shares (NASDAQ: GOOGL) plunged 7.13% on Thursday, closing at $317.69 after its latest earnings report, a move that pushed the stock into technically oversold territory on its daily chart.
The Post-Earnings Plunge
The sharp sell-off drove the stock price below all of its key daily and weekly pivot support levels, a technical development that indicates the move was significant enough to dislocate the price from its recent trading structure, according to an analysis by Investing.com. The stock saw a slight stabilization in pre-market trading Friday, rising 0.35% to $318.79.
Increased volatility is expected, with the Average True Range (ATR) surging to $11.82, signaling the potential for wider-than-usual intraday price swings.
A Tale of Two Timelines
Technical indicators are now showing a rare divergence across different timeframes. The daily chart signals extreme short-term selling pressure, while the monthly chart maintains a constructive, long-term bullish outlook.
On the daily frame, several oscillators point to an oversold condition that could precede a technical bounce:
Ad- The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI), a momentum gauge, fell to 31.0, just above the 30 level that typically signals an oversold condition.
- The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) plummeted to -305.6, a deeply oversold reading.
- The Stochastic RSI, another momentum indicator, registered 0.00, its lowest possible value.
In stark contrast, the monthly chart remains in a "Strong Buy" posture across all major indicators, according to the analysis. The weekly MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) also remains in buy territory, suggesting that longer-term momentum has not yet fully reversed despite the sharp one-day drop.
Key Levels for Investors
Traders are now focused on several key technical levels that could determine the stock's next move. The immediate line in the sand is the weekly S2 pivot support level at $320.56. A failure to reclaim and hold this level could open the door to a test of a more significant support zone between the weekly S3 pivot at $299.76 and the monthly S2 pivot at $307.02.
Conversely, any technical bounce would likely face initial resistance near former support levels around the $336 to $339 range. A decisive move above this area would be needed to suggest the sell-off was a temporary overreaction.
