Airbus Shares Soar on Ambitious Profit Targets and €5 Billion Buyback Plan

Shares of Airbus (AIR) surged 6.9% to €207.95 after the European aerospace giant announced ambitious new financial targets and a major capital return program at an investor update in London, significantly bolstering investor confidence.
New Financial Roadmap
Airbus management outlined a goal to achieve an adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of €12 billion to €13 billion by 2029. This target represents a substantial increase from the €7.13 billion generated in 2025 and the approximately €7.5 billion targeted for the current year.
To underscore its financial strength, the company's board also approved a €5 billion share buyback program to be executed over the next three years. "We have a level of visibility we’ve never had before," CEO Guillaume Faury told investors, according to Investing.com. "We’ve put behind us a lot of challenges and we’ve cleared the skies to move forward."
Operational Outlook and Context
AdThe company expects its commercial aircraft division to be the primary driver of this growth, contributing around €10 billion to the 2029 profit target. This forecast is supported by plans to increase production rates for its popular A320neo family of jets and a growing order book for widebody aircraft.
Airbus also noted that it expects persistent engine supply chain issues from supplier Pratt & Whitney to be resolved by 2028, removing a key operational overhang. The company's confident outlook stands in stark contrast to its main rival, Boeing, which continues to face significant production challenges.
Market Reaction
The stock's outsized gain was a purely company-driven event, as it occurred while broader U.S. market benchmarks were trading lower. The positive update follows an earlier note of confidence from RBC in July, which had raised its price target on Airbus to €215 with an "Outperform" rating, citing strong second-quarter delivery data.
