Background

AI startup Reflection announced on Tuesday it has signed a deal worth more than $1 billion with cloud provider Nebius to secure vital computing capacity. The agreement includes access to Nvidia’s latest chips, a critical resource for developing advanced artificial intelligence.

The Race for AI Resources

The deal highlights the intense competition among AI firms to lock in the massive computing power required to train and run large-scale models. Demand for these resources has been surging as businesses adopt AI, outpacing the construction of new data centers.

This agreement with Nebius significantly expands Reflection's capabilities. It follows a separate deal the startup made with SpaceX in June, which media reports said would cost approximately $150 million per month through 2029 for additional computing capacity.

Reflection, founded by two former Google DeepMind researchers, specializes in developing open-source AI models. These models are positioned as alternatives to the closed-source, proprietary systems offered by industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Open-source models are gaining traction in the market for several reasons. They are often more customizable and cheaper to operate, which appeals to businesses looking to manage rising AI-related expenses. Recent U.S. restrictions on certain advanced models, such as those from Anthropic, have also underscored the risks for companies that rely on a single, proprietary provider.

"The need for open models is clear, and this additional compute capacity will allow Reflection to continue to build and train frontier AI models at scale," said Ioannis Antonoglou, Reflection’s chief technology officer and co-founder, in a statement.
