AEX Index Falls to One-Month Low on Broad Sector Weakness

The Netherlands' benchmark AEX index fell 0.78% on Thursday to close at a new one-month low, pressured by widespread losses across several key sectors. The decline reflects broader investor caution, with falling stocks significantly outnumbering advancers on the Amsterdam exchange.
Sector and Stock Performance
The downturn was led by weakness in the Basic Materials, Real Estate, and Healthcare sectors, according to closing market data. The market breadth was negative, with 73 stocks declining compared to 22 that advanced, while 10 remained unchanged.
Among the index's worst performers were:
- Adyen NV (AS:ADYEN), which dropped 3.43% to close at 919.00.
- ArcelorMittal SA (AS:MT), declining 2.62% to end the session at 64.68.
- BE Semiconductor Industries NV (AS:BESI), which fell 2.57% to 184.10.
AdPockets of Strength
Despite the negative sentiment, a few companies bucked the trend. The day's top performers on the AEX included Magnum Ice Cream Nv (AS:MICCT), which rose 1.56%, and telecommunications firm Koninklijke KPN NV (AS:KPN), which gained 0.91%. IMCD NV (AS:IMCD) also finished higher, adding 0.74%.
Broader Market Context
In the commodities market, energy prices saw a significant surge. Crude oil for October delivery climbed 5.78% to $101.60 a barrel, while Brent oil for November delivery rose 5.60%. In contrast, the December Gold Futures contract fell 1.23%. Meanwhile, the AEX Volatility index, a measure of market uncertainty, was unchanged at 21.09, suggesting the move was orderly.
