AEX Index Closes Higher as Tech and Energy Stocks Outweigh Broader Declines

The Dutch AEX index finished Monday's trading session with a slight gain, closing up 0.17% in Amsterdam. The modest advance was driven by strong performances in the technology and energy sectors, which managed to outweigh a broader market where declining stocks outnumbered advancers.
Tech and Energy Stocks Lead Gains
The technology sector was a key driver of the positive close, with semiconductor equipment manufacturers posting significant gains. ASM International NV (AS:ASMI) was the top performer on the index, surging 4.48%.
Other notable movers included:
- BE Semiconductor Industries NV (AS:BESI), which climbed 2.97%.
- Oil and gas services firm SBM Offshore NV (AS:SBMO), which rose 2.66%.
AdOn the downside, payments company Adyen NV (AS:ADYEN) fell 2.55%, while technology investor Prosus (AS:PRX) declined 1.80%, hitting a new 52-week low. Market breadth indicated underlying weakness, as 54 stocks on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange fell compared to 41 that advanced, with 11 ending unchanged, according to data from Investing.com.
Broader Market Context
The gains in energy stocks were supported by a rally in the oil market. Crude oil for October delivery increased by 1.78% to trade at $93.11 a barrel, while Brent oil for November delivery rose 1.45%.
In other markets, gold futures for December delivery retreated by 0.36%. The AEX Volatility index, a measure of implied market risk, remained unchanged at 21.09. In currency markets, the EUR/USD and EUR/GBP pairs were little changed, while the U.S. Dollar Index Futures saw a modest decline of **0.28%.
