AEX Gains 1.28% as Semiconductor Stocks Rally

Summary
The Dutch benchmark AEX index closed higher on Friday, propelled by significant gains in major technology and semiconductor stocks. BE Semiconductor Industries led the advance with a 7% surge.
The Netherlands' benchmark stock index, the AEX, finished the trading week on a strong note, closing up 1.28% on Friday. The rally was primarily driven by robust performance in the technology sector, with financial and basic materials stocks also contributing to the gains.
Semiconductor Stocks Lead the Charge
The technology sector was the standout performer, with semiconductor equipment manufacturers posting significant advances. The top-performing stocks on the AEX included:
- BE Semiconductor Industries NV (BESI), which surged 7.00%.
- ASM International NV (ASMI), climbing 5.45%.
- ASML Holding NV (ASML), which gained 3.51%.
This strong showing from the chip sector provided the main impetus for the index's upward move. According to market data, rising stocks on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange outnumbered decliners by a margin of 50 to 42, with 13 issues ending the session unchanged.
Laggards and Market Volatility
AdDespite the overall positive market, several companies saw their shares decline. The worst performers of the session included Wolters Kluwer, which fell 1.19%, and IMCD NV, down 0.81%.
Notably, shares in global tech investor Prosus NV dropped 0.90%, hitting a new 52-week low. Meanwhile, the AEX Volatility index, a measure of implied market volatility, remained unchanged at 21.09, suggesting the day's gains did not significantly alter investor expectations of future price swings.
Broader Market Movements
In the commodities markets, energy and precious metals saw downward pressure. Crude oil for November delivery fell, while Brent oil for December delivery also declined. Gold futures contracts for December also traded lower.
In currency markets, the EUR/USD and EUR/GBP pairs were relatively stable. The US Dollar Index Futures saw a modest decline, trading down 0.20% at 101.68.
