AeroVironment Stock Rallies on Strong Earnings Beat and Record Backlog

AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) shares gained 3.9% in after-hours trading Wednesday after the company posted first-quarter fiscal 2027 results that handily beat analyst expectations. The defense contractor's strong performance and record backlog eased investor concerns that had pressured the stock earlier in the day.
Earnings Exceed Expectations
AeroVironment reported a substantial beat on both its top and bottom lines for the quarter. The key figures from the release include:
- Adjusted Earnings Per Share (EPS): $0.59, nearly double the consensus analyst estimate of $0.30.
- Revenue: A record $480.5 million, which topped the forecast of $459.9 million.
The company attributed the strong results to broad-based demand, with its Autonomous Systems segment seeing revenue growth of 21%. This was driven by demand for its Uncrewed Aircraft Systems and Precision Strike munitions, including the Switchblade drone franchise.
Record Backlog and Reaffirmed Guidance
AdAdding to investor confidence, AeroVironment's funded backlog climbed to a record $1.5 billion, a 37% increase year-over-year. This figure provides significant forward visibility into future revenue, a key metric for defense contractors.
The company also reaffirmed its full-year fiscal 2027 guidance, projecting revenue between $2.125 billion and $2.225 billion and adjusted EPS in the range of $3.02 to $3.34. This reassurance was critical for investors, as analyst estimates had been trimmed in the week leading up to the report, sparking fears of a potential guidance cut.
Market Reaction
The after-hours rally represented a sharp reversal from the regular trading session, during which the stock had fallen approximately 4.7% as traders braced for a potentially negative report. The subsequent bounce indicates a relief rally among investors.
The move was entirely company-specific, occurring against a muted broader market backdrop where the S&P 500 and NASDAQ were essentially flat. Despite the gain, the stock remains well below its 52-week high of $417.86.
